Our Story
This photograph gained significant attention from news and media outlets after it captured one of only two firefighters left to battle a wildfire alone in Gem County during the past summer. This situation highlighted serious safety concerns and the lack of sufficient local resources for effective wildfire response and mitigation.
Incidents like this were the driving force behind the creation of Gem County Wildfire Services—an organization established to ensure that our community has dedicated, trained personnel and the necessary equipment to respond immediately and effectively to wildfires, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Our mission is to strengthen local wildfire response capabilities and prevent situations like this or the 2024 Lava Fires from occurring again.
Gem State Wildfire Services
At Gem State Wildfire Services, we were founded with a clear purpose: to close the critical gaps in wildland fire response and provide rapid, effective protection for our communities when time matters most.
Across Gem County and surrounding areas, we recognized a growing need for a more immediate, boots-on-the-ground approach to wildfire suppression—one that prioritizes early engagement, aggressive initial attack, and access to terrain that traditional resources often cannot reach in time. Our organization was built to meet that need.
Our leadership is rooted in experience and commitment. With 32 years of combined service, our founders and Chiefs bring extensive knowledge in wildland firefighting, incident response, and community protection. This experience drives our mission and ensures that every response is guided by proven tactics, sound judgment, and a deep understanding of fire behavior in our region.
What sets us apart is our ability to go where others cannot. Equipped with off-road capable vehicles, including UTVs and specialized apparatus, we are able to access remote and rugged terrain quickly—areas often unreachable by standard fire engines. This mobility allows us to engage fires earlier, contain them faster, and reduce the risk of small ignitions becoming large-scale incidents.
As a 100% volunteer, donation-funded organization, we are deeply connected to the communities we serve. Our commitment extends beyond emergency response—we actively work with residents to promote defensible space, wildfire awareness, and proactive land management to strengthen resilience before fire season begins.
